The VTS
The ST Doctor scheme runs significantly different to other schemes and it is important to have a good idea of whether this scheme is suited to your needs.
The scheme now runs with the ST undertaking a modular training format in blocks of 2 and 3 days. These are those modules available through the Keele University on the Master of Medical Science course. These modules can build up to attract enough M level credits to obtain a certificate, Diploma or even a Masters degree. For more details please see the “Academic Programme” page and see the appropriate Keele University web page for the MmedSci scheme.
The first year is a set of core modules which align very closely with the new GP Curriculum. These are Ethics, Communication skills, Evidence Based Medicine and Reflective Practice. In the second year there is a choice in that each doctor can take up to 4 of the remaining modules available on the masters course. The modules still mirror closely the curriculum and are all made up of a taught component and an assignment based on private study. It is not so much teaching new things but teaching in a different format with an academic leaning. Further details are available in the programme specification.
The format means study leave allowances can be used more effectively but swaps and changes may be required from some ST’s to ensure everyone can attend. The rota managers try their best to accommodate everyone but flexibility helps to make everything happen. The study leave budget is used up with the ST course. Whilst this is somewhat restrictive to some, there are few other courses required as an ST. The study leave budget is also used up and an extra supplement is required from each ST doctor as the cost of the course is greater than the study leave budget. What each doctor gets in return is a selection of modules which lead to a diploma or even a masters degree. This requires a contribution from each ST doctor in addition to the study leave allowance. The teaching is undertaken by specialists in each field and the VTS provides an opportunity to obtain a postgraduate qualification that few if any other VTS courses afford.
This does not apply to the Registrar part of the scheme who have their own study leave budget. Should a registrar decide to undertake a masters degree then other fees apply and extra time maywell be given to complete this part of the scheme. In some cases 4 months extra are funded by the deanery
The modules follow a broad range of topics usually found on any regular half-day release course. There is a mix of ethics, communication skills, research methods etc. The full complement of modules can be found on the “MMedSci” page under the “Academic Programme” heading. Please explore the different modules to get a better feel for the course. The study leave time and budget is exactly the same as the traditional half-day scheme. The modules are allocated in ST year 1 and in the ST2 year there is a choice of other modules. The study leave is highlighted to STs, the Consultant and rota managers well in advance to allow for rotas to be accommodated. At course times flexibility and swapping is required to allow attendance at the modules.
The cost of the Diploma course is £1000 per year and £500 of this comes directly from the study leave budget. STs are required to supplement this with their own money to the tune of £400.
Unfortunately, postgraduate degree courses of this nature are not free but this one utilises all the study leave budget. This ensures the budget is used but of course there is no money for other courses etc. STs are required to complete an enrolement form for Keele University before starting on the course. References etc. are required so close attention to this form is required. ST’s are able to access all the facilities at Keele University afforded to students. Study leave forms and enrolement forms will be sent out to new starters and then are available through the secretary Karen Delay.
The benefits of this format is that: - it presents more study leave time than previously available - it uses all the study leave budget - the tutors and rota managers are aware of study leave well in advance
The draw backs are: - little option on the module - no money for other courses
The Registrar scheme
This is managed by Dr Alison Foster. This part of the scheme runs on 1/2 days and an annual residential course at some distant and pleasant venue.
The registrars undertake their teaching on Thursday afternoons. To provide them with the appropriate experience, guidance, supervision and professional support; thereby enabling them to develop into independent practitioners capable of monitoring and enhancing their own professional performance and learning.
We aim to provide a relaxed environment for learning with an accent on making the sessions enjoyable and relevant to modern GP Registrars to own the programme and welcome suggestions.
The course develops Registrars to achieve their desired attainment. This may have different forms but the course attempts to address individual and groups goals. In view of the fact that the ST’s are taught separately the registrars are able to concentrate on their focused objectives. Some Registrars opt for an academic job which lasts for 16 months (12 months as a normal registrar+4 months extension) and allows time to complete the Masters Degree and the nMRCGP.
MENTORING
Mentoring is actively pursued to help at every stage of the course. Pastoral and academic issues are all discussed. The mentoring covers module work, departmental training (for those on the SHO part of the scheme)and reviews your reflective professional work/portfolio as part of the Reflective Practice module and your professional re-accreditation portfolio you are expected to keep.
