MMedsci
Academic Programme
Overview
This page is most useful to doctors as it gives a link to the Keele University registration form.
It is vital that this is completed to obtain credits for the modules.
We now have our own NorthstaffsVTS BLOG where you can discuss medical topics of interest.
(Please note: We are not responsible for the content of the Weblog).
It is vital that all ST doctors know how to obtain their CCT in General Practice.
LATEST NEWSLETTER
For the Academic scheme it is vital that an application form is completed with all refernces prior to starting the modules. Please contact Sylvia Arino for details
(See EDUCATIONAL TEAM )
The rest of the section details the modules and various aspects of the assignments etc.
Each page gives the module leader. If you have any problems with any module please contact each module leader for further guidance.
Assignments must be completed on time to obtain the credits and copying is not allowed. This is viewed very seriously by the University and could lead to expulsion form the whole academic part of the course.
Structure
The course is formulated around the MMedSci course at Keele University. Each module carries 10 or 15 credits and the successful completion of the assignment for each module allows credits to be collected. These add up as you progress through the scheme. The total required is as follows
1. Certificate in Primary Care=60 credits
2. Diploma in Primary Care=120 credits
3. Masters (MMedSci) in Primary care=120 credits+60 credit dissertation.
Every doctor should have the opportunity to complete about 3-4 modules per year. Some doctors are only on the scheme for 1 year but may obtain enough credits to be awarded a Certificate. There remains an opportunity to undertake further modules after their hospital jobs have finished, even as a principal or salaried GP (see Higher Professional Education or HPE, section) as the credits are valid for a number of years after the last module is completed. Academic Registrar posts are available to allow extra time to complete the dissertation as well as all those other parts of MRCGP that have to be completed in the Registrar (or ST3) Year.
The structure and content of these modules are designed to compliment the drive to become a well rounded GP whilst attaining successful accreditation in MRCGP. The various modules help with COTs, CBD and other submissions, critical analysis of research papers and research methods. The details of these modules are available in this section of the web site. Please browse over them to get a better idea of what is presently on offer.
MENTORING
Mentoring is actively pursued to help at every stage of the course. Pastoral and academic issues are all discussed. You will need to bring along any work already done and any worries to these meetings if required. The mentoring covers module work, departmental training and reviews your reflective professional work portfolio as part of the Reflective Practice module and as part of your professional re-accreditation portfolio you are expected to keep.
OTHER RESOURCES
Other resources include the Hospital library (tel, 01782 556565) who will help with literature searches and obtaining books etc. This is now situated in the CEC building on the City General site and is a wonderful environment to study. The librarians run courses on I.T. and basic “critical reading skills” among other things. The details of all these and more are available on the library web site:
http://www.keele.ac.uk/depts/li/hl/nhs/nhstraining.htm
You can even search for the availability of books and re-book those already in your possession at:

NHS Library
You are a student at Keele University so don’t be afraid to utilise all the facilities available on the Keele University site.
Medical Illustration can help with advice on presentations and video editing for the various modules (tel 01782 554364).
Course tutors are always willing to help should you have any difficulties. Advice on extensions is available but you should contact the course tutor as soon as your run into any difficulties as it is not a foregone conclusion you’re extension request will be sanctioned. Advice form those already on the course suggests that early completion of the assignments ensures completion. Late work tends not to be finished and then no credits can be awarded for that module.
A note about plagiarism, don’t do it! The University closely scrutinize every submission and have sophisticated methods of finding where parts of text or whole submissions have come from. Your own work is required and anything which deviates from this may result in expulsion from the University course, not just that module.
