Palliative Care

SHO Posts - Palliative Care

This post is quite new to the North Staffordshire scheme. It is a collaboration with The Douglas MacMillan Hospice in Blurton. The job entails a number of aspects. Ward work entails looking after the small number of in patients. There are two wards which are looked after by 4 doctors, some of which are clinical assistants who have a specialist interest in Palliative Care. The consultant in charge of all 4 doctors and the general clinical work of the Hospice is Dr Clare Hookey.

Learning takes place at the bed side with frequent discussions about pain managment, symptom relief and career support etc. Organised and more formal teaching takes place as well on various aspects of palliative care dependent on the needs of the doctor.

You will be introduced to the whole team of palliative care workers and obtain a more comprehensive and holsitic patient centered approach to caren that one is rarely able to experience in other hospital areas.
