GP Registrar Training - Training Practices

All the training practices in North Staffordshire are listed.

During the first part of your last 6 month job you should look at which practices are vacant (see below) and approach the trainer/practice manager. A personal visit is necessary to find out whether you like the trainer and visa versa!

Once you have decided you will need to complete a preference form (see below) and send it onto Dr Alwyn Ralphs.

Registrars are then allocated to practices at the next trainer’s workshop. Consideration is given to personal preference and which practices are new to training or have been fallow for a while.

Dr Ralphs will discuss allocations with you and once the final decision has been made you should complete an R7 form and hand this into the practice manager as soon as possible. This form is essential as it indicates to Birmingham Regional Office where you are going but more importantly where to send your salary. No form means no salary!

As a registrar you will be an essential part of the practice team with your own surgeries, patients to see and visit, tutorials to attend, practice meetings to join in with etc. It is a responsible job and needs commitment to the task.
For example starting surgery late or not preparing for tutorials makes for tiresome training. You will get out what you put in, and many put a lot into the job, including the trainers.

Trainers have to complete regular appraisals to guide your training thought the year. It is up to you to think about what your needs are and what subjects need to be covered. Don’t be afraid to feedback to your trainer what you feel about the tutorials. They can only be improved or changed if you shout up.

Generally registrars enjoy their 12months in practice. Practices enjoy having a registrar around. Summative Assessment requires a number of assessments and I would suggest you look at the appropriate web page to gain more information. It is you responsibility to make sure you complete these tasks, not the sole job of the trainer to put you through them!

Membership is also a good target to aim for. I would suggest you discuss this with your trainer as soon as possible to guide your tutorials and teaching.

Should you have any problems please discuss them with Dr Ralphs or your trainer.
